I play an organizer of World Japanese Sake Community called Japanese Sake Lovers with my business partner. The group was started in 2016. The purpose of the group is to connect Sake Lovers all over the world and to be a place people sharing awesome experience with sake.
After my partner and I discussed about the concept of the community, I designed a logo for the community.
In this page, I am going to explain my way of designing a logo. Logo designing is a very first step of the branding process.
I started drawing a mind map. When I start something creative, I always do mind map first to understand things I really want to express.
On the map, the right side is about a concept or strategy of the community. WHO do I want to connect with through the community? WHAT is the goal of the group existing?
If I had long time, I do contextual inquiry, focus group interview or survey to make a persona. However, for this project, I wanted to have a logo quickly. So I designed it based on my knowledge from previous experience (I am also running a Sake Web Magazine).
On the left top area, it is about the uniqueness of sake. Because this is a group for Japanese Sake Lovers, the logo should represent some attraction of sake.
From those keywords, I pick “Lite Blue” for a key color and a sake bottle for a key shape.
Keywords written on the bottom area of the mind map represent basic designing principals as well as a trend of logo design. Those give me some hint to design a great logo.
The blue line on the left represents a bottle of sake. The logotype is on the right side.
